What to Do After a Car Accident

Coral Springs Car Accident Attorney

Even if you are the most responsible driver on the road, the negligence of other drivers, as well as many other factors, can cause you to be involved in a motor vehicle accident. If you are involved in a car crash in Florida, it is important to know what steps to take after the accident, especially if you or someone else was injured in the wreck.

Important Steps to Take After a Car Crash or Other Vehicle Accident

The following are important reminders if you or a loved one is involved in a car collision, motorcycle accident, truck accident or any other motor vehicle accident in Florida:

  • Injuries? Assess the extent of injuries and determine if immediate medical attention is necessary. Call an ambulance if immediate medical help is needed. If your injuries do not require immediate attention, it is still a good idea to obtain a thorough medical examination soon after the car crash. This can help in identifying signs of a concussion or other subtle injuries so that you are properly treated. This also serves to medically document your injuries soon after the car wreck.
  • Driver and witness info. Obtain all necessary information regarding the other driver and his or her vehicle, including driver name and contact information, insurance information, license plate number, vehicle type, vehicle identification number (VIN) and other relevant information. Also obtain contact information from all witnesses. Witnesses can provide valuable perspective about the accident, but they can be difficult to track down later without this information.
  • Facts. Memories quickly fade. Document everything you can recall about the accident, including weather conditions, time of day, events leading up to the accident, whether the other driver seemed intoxicated and any other relevant information. Do not discuss this information with anyone. Even if you feel it is not warranted, call the police to report the accident and ensure it is properly documented. Also, obtain a copy of the police report if possible.
  • Photos. Whether right away at the accident scene with a cellphone or soon after with a camera, take pictures as soon as possible in order to properly document accident damage and injuries. Important photos may include pictures of physical damage to the vehicles, tire tracks in the road, the accident scene itself, visible injuries and other information.
  • Insurance claims. Don't offer a recorded statement to the insurance company, and never sign an insurance company's settlement offer without first talking with an experienced personal injury attorney. Insurance companies are concerned with paying as little as possible for injury claims, not with paying the full amount you'll need for ongoing medical treatment, lost income and other hardships.
  • Lawyer. Contact an experienced car accident attorney right away after the accident to ensure your rights are fully protected. A skilled auto accident lawyer can level the playing field with the insurance company. At The Law Offices of Jason S. Goodman, P.A., we stand up for your rights and ensure the insurance company plays fair. We work diligently to present a compelling case regarding the extent of your injuries, the future medical treatment you'll require and the negligence of the other driver.
